Technogeeks Unite…

What is a technogeek? A guy who knows that Apple is more than a fruit? A guy who can debug TCP/IP protocols? A guy that can set up a Linux server in under 30 seconds? A guy who not only owns but knows how to use the many tech gadgets he owns? What defines a technogeek?

I guess like any other classes, a technogeek can exist in a whole range of persona’s ranging from the wannabe’s to the high class yuppies. On one hand we have the people trying to be tach savvy and sometimes failing miserably at it as they attempt to do things like try and speed up their net connection by straightening their LAN cable and putting it in a downhill motion. Or even installing Kazaa because its the “in” thing without knowing the tonnes of crap that can come with it.

Then I guess you have the average technogeek. The technogeeks that can know their stuff but don’t have all the stuff that they know. The technogeeks that pride themselves in setting up a completely new gaming system in under 10 minutes from box to table. The technogeek that knows enough to troubleshoot the most perplexing of tech troubles or wardrive around their neighbourhood laughing at technogeek wannabe’s with open ports in their Wireless LANs. But unfortunately not enough to pride themselves in say…creating some state-of-the-art Linux server from scratch with all the works. That pride goes to this nex batch of Technogeeks.

The Hardcore Technogeek are the pride of all technogeeks. They are the innovators, the rebels, the saviours and the BFG 10k’s of the tech world. They are the people responsible for giving you the most amazing custom mods a PC can ever have. The people who are can crack your Windows password in under 24 hours. The people who can seemlessly bridge an Apple, a Windows and a Linux operating system under one hamonious stable roof with no problems. Whatever tech gadgets they can’t buy (and they MUST), they will make from scratch. Can’t buy an IPod? Hell…make one from spare parts. Scared that the RIAA will bust your file-sharing ass? Make a mobile 800 GB Anonymous WiFi system and park it safely at any place with open WiFi Access. These hardcore technogeeks make anything possible. Nothing is out of their reach…

I guess I’m the hardcore wannabe. I wardrive when I can. I can break windows passwords in an average of 48 hours. I still have NO idea how to set up an SQL DB nor can I set up a Linux Server at home. I do build my hardware systems from scratch and I do troubleshoot people’s PC problems wherever I go. I pride myself with a 200GB RAID server in my own home with all the ridiculous security that even a paranoid man can feel proud off (I DARE you to Van Eck Phreak me). I can’t mod any of my systems for crap nor can I build my own portable MP3 Player.

That’s as much tech skills I can muster…and people wonder why I take Biotechnology as my career. I can’t blame them…but as much as I love to play God with evolution. I’ve always been a technogeek at heart and that’s something that no one can ever take away from me…
