Stirring from my sleep, I caught a glimpse of her checking the note I left on her bag. A quiet reminder of things awaiting her when she returns. Even in the faint light, I still catch her sheepish grin in response to my words. Turning to me in my fake slumber, she bends over to give me a final kiss farewell. I catch her in mid-stride, embracing her in my arms pulling her closer.
“I’m going to miss you when you’re gone”
“Liar. You have one week on temporary bachelorhood to exploit.”
She knows me well.
“Given the hours this week, you know I’ll miss you.”
“I know. I also know you’ll be strong.”
She really knows me well.
“Don’t flirt with too many girls. You have a ton of work to do.”
“Don’t perve at too many guys. You’re there for a conference.”
We definitely know each other too well.
As she broke the embrace, I looked at her one last time before going back to my slumber. It wasn’t that I wouldn’t see her off, it would be that I would hope to open my eyes and see her again. Even if what I saw rests in my slumber, she’d still be there, a presence that while never be able to calm my chaotic thoughts, would always do her best to sooth my restless soul.
Even if this long week is a lonely one, driven by needful responsibilities that can’t be avoided. Sometimes the dream is better than nothing. At least until I start flirting with all the girls again. As if I have the time for that.
