In all the fuss I’ve been kicking around in my life thus far, it turns out that I’ve missed a small milestone for this blog. While it took 3 and a half years of blogging for me to hit 100,000 visitors, it has taken just over a year for me to hit over 200,000 visitors. Talk about steady growth.
Of course, that’s no real milestone for me considering that at the end of it, it’s the community you build around your blog, not the amount of people that come visit that matter most. I suppose it’s still true that great blogs aren’t necessarily the most read. There are a lot of understated blogs out there that are good no matter who reads them. Most will never be known by the public, a lot don’t even comply to the mainstream masses. Maybe that’s what makes them good and that’s the kind of quality I’ve always been trying to grow here.
I won’t lie to you though. There are days when waking up in the morning and finding out that you have over 400 incoming visitors to a post you thought no one would give a damn about does make you feel good inside. I know it does for me. Yet one hit posts like that with nary a comment to hold its popularity does seem a little hollow. I’ve been getting a lot of that. Somehow that still feels a little disappointing.
Someone said once that the stories I tell about my life are a little hard to follow. They are like fractured chapters that have no beginning and an end. Maybe that’s true. It’s hard to be interested in a story you know nothing about. But telling the story is usually for the benefit of people that love a little prose to an otherwise mundane life I lead, fortunately for me, putting it down to begin with has always been for my benefit first. Shucks if I don’t blog for my readers.
In any case, for a lot of blogs out there, 200,000 visitors and more than 4 years of blogging definitely puts me in the range of people that are very good in having nothing better to do in our lives. While most fade away after a couple of months, doomed to little the interweb with it’s stagnant lonely post from several months ago. Mine shall probably keep going.
It shall probably have it’s ups and downs. Its quiet weeks and its furious hours. It shall probably still have its readers, from the ones who silently follow me through my feeds, to the ones that actually do comment. From the ones that keep in touch personally, to the ones that come here looking to make their penis bigger. At the end of it, how many people visit my blog shouldn’t really matter. What really should matter is that they actually do read what’s on it.
Now that is a milestone I can take to the bank.
